(yes, that is a reference from Family Guy) But seriously, I just read an article in the Washington Post that was so horrible, wrong and absurd on so many levels.
Titled "What the Oscar Drama Needs is Some Comic Relief" by Desson Thomson. This guy as talking about how Musicals and Comedies don't stand a chance against Dramas when the Academy Award for Best Picture is being handed out, and he thinks that he's that first person to realize this. Then he comes up with this just brilliant idea: Lets have a category for Best Musical/Comedy for Best Picture, Actor and Actress at the Oscars just like the Golden Globes.
First of all, he didn't suggest that there should also be a Best Drama category too, so someone could interpret this as: "Lets have a Best Picture category and a Best Musical/Comedy, since there two different things." How insulting is that to filmmakers of Musical/Comedies?
Secondly, his whole reasoning for this is so great movies like "Juno" and "Sweeney Todd" can be awarded. I've already stated my problems w/"Juno" and in case he hasn't realized, Sweeney Todd wasn't nom'd for Best Picture at the Oscars.
But lets also take a look at the fact that he thinks best Actor and Actress can be split up so, "Ellen Page gets her prize for 'Juno', so Julie Christie can walk away with something for 'Away From Her'." Here is where I get pissed. Supposedly , Ellen Page is oscar-worthy in her cute indie comedy. What do you want a bet that Desson Thompson hasn't seen Marion Cortillard in "La Vie en Rose", let only the other two women in the best Actress category. I wouldnt even be suprised if he hasn't seen "Away From Her".
The best part, by far in this article is when he quotes this man, "If you break up the categories, you dilute the specialness of these five [Best Picture] movies. If you have categories for comedy and musical, where do you draw the line? What about horror movies?" The man he's quoting: "Juno" producer Mason Novick. The producer behind the movie that Thompson is spending almost the entire article fighting, is saying that Thompson Is Wrong. And Thompson thought it was a good idea to put that quote in the article. Bravo.
But the main problem, beyond everything else in this wretched article, I have is that this guy doesn't realize is that its not the Golden Globes -- its the Academy Awards, the most prestigious film award for the past eighty years. They award the best of the best, and the Golden Globes is there to help narrow it down by taking two (three, since its Musical/Comedy) main, broad genres and award the top film in each genre.
But really, the reason they would never have a Musical/Comedy category is because there aren't enough great Musical/Comedies that come out every year.
Thompson wants "Sweeney Todd" and "Juno" to get recognition but the other films in this years Best Musical/Comedy category at the Golden Globes were "Hairspray", "Across the Universe" and "La Vie en Rose" (Lets ignore "La Vie en Rose" for the moment, since its really not a musical or a comedy).
Can anyone, and i mean anyone claim the either "Hairspray" or "Across the Universe" is better than "Michael Clayton", "No Country for Old Men", "There Will Be Blood" or "Atonement"?
Yeah, I thought so.
