For those of you who haven't heard, the Writer's Guild strike is finally over. For the past few days rumors have been flying around about this happening, but now, the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) have reached a somewhat confusing agreement, but from what I can tell, here are the main points:
- It lasts through May 1, 2011
- writer's get 3.5% of the $ generated from prime-time tv shows, which increase by 3% the second year, and 5% the third year
In terms of "New Media" (ie. Youtube, Metacafe, V Cast -- virtually anything thats not a TV set):
- The term above still stands for a "New Media" show if it costs $15,000 per minute; $300,000 per program; or $500,000 per series order, otherwise
> The minimum for dramatic programs is $618 for two minutes, plus $309 for each additional minute.
> The minimum for derivative comedy-variety and daytime serials is $360 for programs up to two minutes, plus $180 for each additional minute.
> The minimum for all other types of derivative programs is $309 for programs
up to two minutes, plus $155 for each additional minute.
For DVD'S:
- The writer's get 1.2% of the distributers gross
For Downloaded TV Shows/Films:
- They get 0.36% for the first 100,000 downloads of TV shows and the first 50,000 downloads of a feature film.
- After that, they get 0.7% for television programs and 0.65% forfeature films.
There are a lot of (fuzzy) details that I left out, but overall it sounds pretty fair to me, and lucky enough, its just in time for the Writer's Guild Awards and the Oscars
